Breastfeeding can be an amazing experience, but it can also be damn hard!
At Vida Glow we encourage a woman's right to choose, and acknowledge that every mother knows what's best for her and her baby.
A happy and healthy mother and baby, is always the most important outcome.
One of the most common question we receive about Vida Glow's marine collagen products is whether they are safe whilst trying to conceive, pregnant and breastfeeding.
Having just had a baby I completely understand wanting to know the ins and outs of what we are putting in and on our bodies, and how it will effect our precious little ones.
So we are going to be break it down here:
Trying to Conceive
Vida Glow's marine collagen is derived from hydrolysed scales of Deep Sea Red Snapper sourced from the Pacific Ocean. Snapper is perfectly safe to eat, in fact recommended during pregnancy. Our marine collagen is not hydrolysed with chemicals, but rather via enzymes and is therefore non - toxic. Our products are 100% fit for human consumption and free from any heavy metals, such as mercury.
If you are already taking our collagen powders daily, and you discover you are pregnant, there is no cause for concern. Simply stop taking our supplements when you find out you are pregnant, and enjoy this happy time in your life.
So you may be wondering why you can't take Vida Glow whilst pregnant, given the information above.
There are four possible side effects of taking Marine Collagen:
Gastrointestinal upset, this occurs when 10 grams or more is being consumed daily, which we do not recommend. The highest recommended dosage of Vida Glow is 9 grams, which is the equivalent to 3 servings a day.
A lingering after taste or smell for approximately 30 minutes after consumption. If you experience this we would recommend stirring Vida Glow's marine collagen into a juice, shake or smoothie, and avoiding it in plain water.
Hypersensitivity reactions can result as a side effect of taking marine collagen supplements. Hypersensitivity reactions happen as an abnormal response of the immune system against allergens, such as food, drugs and supplements. Collagen supplements that come from ocean fish or other marine sources may cause an allergic reaction, usually in the form of a skin rash. Please note that this is not serious, unless you have an allergy to fish, and usually subsides once you stop consuming the supplement.
Number 3 - a Hypersensitivity reaction - is the reason why we do not recommend marine collagen supplementation during pregnancy. It may not seem so serious, and a hypersensitive reaction usually isn't. However, it's simply not worth it and it is not recommended.
Here's the good news mamma's, taking marine collagen is safe whilst breastfeeding and actually extremely beneficial for hair, skin and nails, especially whilst your body is undergoing huge hormonal changes. Post - natal depletion is real (read more here) and believe me your hair, skin and nails will be extremely grateful for the extra nutrients, protein and amino acids, that our collagen provides.
I stopped my marine collagen intake when I was 6 weeks pregnant, and started on two servings a day when my son was one week old (the day I arrived home from the hospital) in 9 weeks my hair grew by 4cm and my nails are the longest they've ever been. Now I'm extremely passionate about our products, but even I was surprised at the difference it made. A long break allowed me to notice the incredible results, and they were measurable, especially when breastfeeding is a time when hair, skin and nails tend to take a beating.
A note on our marine collagen products: they are NOT suitable for anyone with an allergy to FISH.
Our delicious Beauty Blend is suitable whilst trying to conceive, pregnant and breastfeeding. The Beauty Blend is a great addition to a healthy diet, there are 7 key ingredients specially blended, containing the essential vitamins and minerals to nourish hair, skin and nails.
The ingredients are; Manuka Honey, Raw Cacao, Blueberries, Chia Seeds, Flaxseeds, Pumpkin Seeds and Probiotics. The nutrients found in these ingredients include iron, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, zinc, Vitamins A and E, Biotin to name but a few. Together these assist skin cell regeneration, tissue repair and the formulation of collagen and elastin, thus supporting skin structure and contributing to a clear and glowing complexion.
Further the probiotics in our Beauty Blend are essential for health especially during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Probiotics beneficially affects our bodies by improving the balance of gut flora in the digestive system. Probiotics aid digestion and help the absorption of minerals; all of which is needed for the absorption of nutrients for healthy hair, skin and nails and regeneration of collagen.
