Health Benefits of Meditation

Science has shown that your mind and body benefits from taking time out of your daily life to shut down and meditate. The benefits of meditation are endless. However, it can be challenging for beginners. Meditation is a delightfully simple practice, but that doesn’t mean it’s easy!

The best meditation advice we’ve ever read at Vida Glow was:

“For 15 minutes each day, sit in a quiet room, wear comfortable clothing, and focus on your breathing. And as your mind wanders, and it will, just release the thought and focus back on your breathing”.

This is an extract from Esther and Jerry Hick’s book “The Law of Attraction”.

The variety of meditation techniques, and technologies is nearly infinite, but the essence of meditation is singular: the cultivation of mindful awareness and expanded consciousness.

The purpose of meditation depends on the meditator; people are drawn to meditation for different reasons. Some begin because of a doctor’s recommendation, seeking health benefits of lowered blood pressure, stress reduction, and restful sleep. Others seek meditation for relief from the fearful, angry or painful thoughts that can be overwhelming their minds.

Many also try meditation to find themselves, to have a greater sense of self –understanding, to increase their concentration and intuitive powers.

Health Benefits include:

  • Relief from stress (decreasing the production of stress hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline)
  • Relief from anxiety (managing the fight or flight response)
  • Decreased blood pressure and hypertension
  • Lowering cholesterol levels
  • More efficient oxygen use by the body
  • Increased production of the anti-ageing hormone DHEA
  • Restful sleep

New research has also shown that meditation restores the brain. A study conducted by Massachusetts General Hospital found that as little as 8 weeks of meditation not only helped people feel calmer, but also produced changes in various areas of the brain. These changes included growth in the areas associated with memory, empathy, sense of self, and stress regulation.
